On 18 June 2026, during the E-Waste World Expo in Frankfurt, the LIFE SIRCULAR project was officially launched, marking the beginning of an ambitious European initiative focused on developing innovative industrial solutions for the recycling of end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The kick-off event brought together project partners, researchers, industry representatives, stakeholders, and participants joining both in person and online. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with circular economy strategies in the renewable energy sector.

Recovering Silicon and Silver from End-of-Life PV Panels

At the heart of LIFE SIRCULAR is the development of an integrated approach for recovering valuable raw materials—particularly silicon and silver—from discarded photovoltaic modules. By enabling the efficient recovery and reuse of these critical resources, the project aims to reduce waste, support resource efficiency, and strengthen the sustainability of the solar energy value chain.

The project is coordinated by BFC Sistemi and implemented in collaboration with Circular Silicon Europe, University of L’Aquila, Smart Waste Engineering, and ORIM Srl.

Building Collaboration Across Europe

A key part of the launch event was dedicated to networking and knowledge exchange among EU-funded projects, research groups, industry associations, and companies active in photovoltaic recycling, resource recovery, circular economy solutions, and sustainable technologies.

The discussions highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in accelerating innovation and creating scalable solutions for managing the growing volume of end-of-life solar panels across Europe.

Contributions from Experts and Industry Leaders

The event featured contributions from a range of experts representing universities, industrial organizations, European projects, and companies working in recycling, materials recovery, and sustainable technology development. Their presentations provided valuable insights into current challenges, emerging technologies, and future opportunities within the PV recycling sector.
